Football team picker app build - Introduction
J

I am a front-end web developer from Blackpool in the UK. Also a Blackpool FC podcast producer and run/own the Seasiders Podcast. Am also a FA Level One qualified football coach and am involved in youth football coaching.

I produce a podcast called 'The Seasiders Podcast' which is a fan's podcast about Blackpool Football Club who are the club I support.

We do a weekly live-streamed match preview show and a feature of the show is where we pick our starting eleven for the next match. I screen share us picking our team on a web app called 'Build Lineup' and this is live-streamed.

The app is OK but there are a few problems with it.

Firstly, the pitch is very small and makes it difficult to see on the stream and I would like the flexibility to show the pitch the full height of the browser viewport to make it easier for the viewer to see.

Secondly, we have to manually type in all the Blackpool players for every position, every time we enter a team. It would be better if we could see a list of the full squad and then click and drag the player name into the position.

Thirdly, the UI kind of gets in the way when we are streaming, I don't want the stream viewers to see it so need the option to be able to toggle it on and off.

And finally, and the UI is generally a bit clunky with heavy use of drop-down menus. Would prefer more drag and drop, and one-click options to improve the general user experience.

Next steps

I have a rough idea now of what I want to build, so need to now list out the next steps:

  1. Write out the features and specifications
  2. Design the UI
  3. Prototype the UI
  4. Code and build
  5. Test and test in StreamYard
  6. Deploy

Stay tuned for the next step!
